Real estate is one of the largest contributors to global emissions of CO2

Recently Yvon Chouinard announced that he sells Patagonia to fight climate change.

This reminds me why I chose the name Algae for our mission. Algae are essential elements for the planet with an incredible adaptability, great diversity and resilience. They have an exceptional capacity for resistance, strong autonomy and thanks to photosynthesis are essential to our existence. Like them, our mission is to empower the world to build resilience and financial security by investing in regenerative real estate from 10€.

Indeed, according to data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, "In France, of all economic sectors, the building sector is the largest consumer of energy: it accounts for 43% of French energy consumption, or 1.1 tons of oil equivalent per year and per capita. In total, the building sector produces more than 120 million tons of CO2 each year, or nearly a quarter of national emissions." The Law on Energy Transition sets several objectives for the sector in order to achieve, by 2050, that the entire French building stock reaches the low energy consumption level.

More recently, the tertiary sector decree that came into force in 2019 sets a target for tertiary buildings to reduce consumption by 40% in 2030, 50% in 2040 and 60% in 2050 (compared to a reference year that cannot be earlier than 2010). These goals are ambitious: according to the barometer of the Observatoire de l'Immobilier Durable, in 2021, the energy consumption of office buildings reached 160 kWh/m2, a 5% decrease compared to 2020.

This barometer* consolidates the main indicators for office, residential, logistics and shopping center buildings. These indicators cover energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and waste production.

* calculated from a database of 23,300 buildings and 54.3 million square meters.

In a decade of observation, the indicators show a basic trend: the average annual decrease in greenhouse gas emissions is only 2.5%, whereas a decrease of at least 4.5% is needed to meet the climate emergency. If the last year reaches this level, it will be necessary to repeat this feat every year to halve the sector's emissions between 2015 and 2030.

A Algae, that's why we are in the process of transforming an old abandoned garage into a coworking space of 390 m2 dedicated to Web3 and impact entrepreneurs in Lisbon.

We aim to put regeneration and sustainability at the heart of our mission with an approach that helps transform lives and communities through healthy, resilient, and beautiful real estate. As real estate is one of the largest contributors to global emissions, we are pleased with this exclusive partnership with KlimaDAO, which allows us to further our goals of contributing to a better future.
